The Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice

The Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice was established in March 2006. The Conductor of the Choir since March 2013 has been Michał Brożek.

The Choir has 90 members. The choir consists of students, graduates, university employees and people from outside the university.

The team represents the University mostly during academic ceremonies, concerts and regional events, competitions and choral music festivals in Poland and worldwide.

The Choir has concerted in Italy, Lithuania, Turkey, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, North Macedonia, China, Greece.

The team wins many awards in national and international competitions such as: 56th International Festival of Sacral Music “Virgo Lauretana” in Loreto, Italy (2016), “Beijing International Choral Festival” in China (2018), “Ohrid Choir Festival” in North Macedonia (2018), 7 th Festival BACH organized by Choir Rencontres Musicales en Loire in Saint-Étienne in France (2019), International Choir Competition “MUNDI CANTANT” in Olomouc  (Czech Republic 2019), Grand Prix of the FESTIVAL “M U S I C & SEA” in Paralia (Greece 2022), XVII International Choir Festival „Gaude Cantem” in Bielsko-Biała (Poland 2022), National Choir Competition “Magnificat” in Bytom (Poland 2022), 26 th International Festival Choir in Provence organized by  Choral Events (France 2023), 33rd National Choir Carol Competition in  Tychy (Poland 2024).

The repertoire of the Choir covers early, classical, romantic and contemporary music including compositions with sacral theme, arrangements of popular music, songs inspired with folk of various nations also vocal and instrumental performances such as Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Joseph Haydn’s Missa Brevis, Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9. Symphony, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, John Rutter’s Magnificat, Johann Sebastian Bach The Mass in B minor BWV 232, Wojciech Kilar Missa pro pace for 4 Solo Voices (SATB), Mixed Choir and Orchestr or Karl Jenkins Stabat Mater.

The choir cooperates with famous artists of the Polish music scene, taking part in film music concert tours, such as “Tribute to Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, John Williams” and popular music “Tribute to”. In December 2023, the band performed at the KATOPOLIS event, opening the celebration of receiving the title of European City of Science by the City of Katowice.

Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice has recorded five albums.

The Choir is the organizer also Metropolitan Choral Festival since 2018. In April 2023 took place the fifth edition.

Conductor - Michał Bożek

Michał Brożek – the conductor, organist, composer, music teacher at the School and Kindergarten Complex No. 5 in Tychy and theoretical and musical subjects and orchestra at the Music School Complex in Tychy. He is a graduate of the Academy of Music. Karol Szymanowski in Katowice. In 2011, he completed his second-cycle studies with honors, specializing in: Choral conducting and theoretical and musical subjects in the conducting class of prof. Ph.D. Iwona Melson and Musical education and theoretical and musical subjects. In 2010, he participated in the 13th National Competition for Choral Conductors in Poznań. During his studies, in 2008, he founded the Cantate Deo Choir operating at the Holy Cross Parish in Tychy, and in 2013 he became the conductor of the Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice. He gives concerts in Poland and abroad, including: in Italy, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Macedonia and China. With the ensembles he leads, he has won numerous awards and distinctions, the most recent of which include victory during the XXXIII Tyskie Carol Evenings in 2024, 1st place in the mixed choir category and 3rd place in the competition for the Grand Prix for the Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice during the 26th International Choral Festival in Provence (France, 2023), 1st place and Golden Diploma for the Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice and a special award for the best performance of a work by a contemporary composer at the “Legnica Cantat” Choral Festival in 2023, Grand Prix award for the Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice during the 10th International Choral Festival “Music and sea” in Paralia, Greece in September 2022, as well as a Gold diploma and first place in the category of academic choirs, a special award for the most interesting interpretation of a sacred piece at the 17th International Choir Festival “Gaude Cantem” in Bielsko-Biała in October 2022. He has received a special award for the best conductor of choral competitions many times – e.g. in 2023 during the “Legnica Cantat” Choral Festival or the XXVI International Choral Festival in Provence. Since 2018, he has been the artistic director of the Metropolitan Choral Festival. He successfully conducted many vocal and instrumental concerts, such as J. Rutter’s Magnificat, G. Faure’s Requiem, J.S.Bach’s Great Mass in B minor, W. Kilar’s Missa pro Pace, and K. Jenkins’s Stabat Mater. He is invited to participate in festivals and competitions as a juror. In 2024, he will take an active part in judging competition performances during the XXVII International Choral Festival in Provence. He has made 4 CD recordings: Gabriel Faure’s Requiem (2014), Christmas carol CDs recorded with the “Cantate Deo” Choir (2015) and with the Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice (2016), as well as the CD Caelesti lumine which contains sacred songs performed by the Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice (2021).
